NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) — After a number of extensions, Virginia is meeting the Real ID standard that was enacted after the September 11 terrorist attacks. The Commonwealth was among the states that didn't comply originally. The federal government is no longer allowing extensions. It will enforce the law beginning October 1, 2020.
That means in two years, a Real ID, or a passport, will be required to enter federal buildings including military installations. The ID or passport also will be needed to take domestic flights. A current Virginia license or state ID won't be accepted without additional documentation.
All Real ID state-issued driver's licenses/state-issued ID cards will have the same marker. It looks like a circle with a star in the top right corner. Non-compliant licenses/IDs will read "federal limits apply" on the card.
At the Norfolk DMV, Elvo Shaw said he thinks the uniform look of the Real ID will help security verify everyone’s identification.
Several people in Norfolk said getting the Real ID is worth not bringing extra documents.
“If we have just one ID, then it’s better,” said Vijay Shed, who lives in Virginia Beach.
The only way you can get your first Real ID is by filling out the paperwork in person and bringing your U.S. Social Security Card, and two proofs of residency.
You can choose to renew your driver’s license with a Real ID by paying a $10-dollar surcharge as well as other fees.
“Doesn’t bother me at all. You’ve got to pay for a passport so, hey, pay for convenience. I don’t mind at all,” said Brenda Person.
If your current ID has a while until it expires you'd need to pay a replacement fee on top of the surcharge to get a 'Real ID' today.
