National Pow-MIA Remembrance Day takes place every third Friday in September.

RICHMOND, Va. — Gov. Glenn Youngkin has ordered flags of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the POW/MIA to be displayed Saturday for Armed Forces Day.

Youngkin announced the order via a release on Friday.

The raising of the flags is "in honor and remembrance of the service and sacrifice of members of the United States Armed Forces who are or were prisoners of war or reported missing in action," according to the release.

Armed Forces Day is observed annually every third Saturday of May. It recognizes those currently serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserve Forces.

President Harry Truman established the holiday in 1950 following World War II.
