NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — After listening to Governor Northam’s comments on Twitter Friday night, it didn't sound like he planned to resign; however, 13NewsNow Political Analyst Quintin Kidd said a photo of him and another person dressed in blackface and a KKK outfit from his medical school days still could lead to the end of Northam’s run as governor.
“Now this didn’t come up in the campaign, but I’m willing to bet you that his campaign knew about it and was prepared for it to come up,” said Kidd. “Not only is this a real problem for the governor just because it’s a real problem, but it's also happening around the country right now,” said Kidd.
Kidd referenced former Florida Secretary of State Michael Ertel’s resignation last month when pictures of him at a party in blackface became public. Then there were the two University of Oklahoma students who left school on their own after posting a video of one of them in blackface on social media.
"People are resigning from offices and being punished on college campuses for this very thing happening right now," Kidd said.
Kidd said it’s similar to when former Senator Al Franken resigned for alleged sexual misconduct in the height of the #MeToo movement.
He said this photo isn’t going away and neither will the pressure for Northam to step down.
"So that makes me wonder if Governor Northam is going to resign like people are calling him on right now," said Kidd. "Now, he may eventually, but I’m not sure we are going to get action like that quickly."
