VIRGINIA, USA — If you plan to go out to watch the big game on Sunday, state officials are urging Virginians to plan ahead and secure a "safe and sober ride home."

In a joint release, the Virginia State Police (VSP) and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reminded folks of the dangers of drinking and driving. The departments also noted that there will be an increase in law enforcement presence on Sunday to "keep drivers and vulnerable road users safe."

“You often hear people say ‘the best defense is a good offense’ and when it comes to preventing drunk driving that is so true,” said DMV Commissioner Gerald Lackey. “If you choose to go out and celebrate with alcohol, please make sure you have a plan before you go out, to get home safely. And never drink and drive. We want to make sure that when the game is over everyone makes it home safely.”

VSP and DMV officials recommend those planning to celebrate the Super Bowl to:

  • Designate a sober driver
  • Call a car whether it be a taxi or through a ride-sharing app
  • Make sure to wear your seatbelt
  • Be a responsible host and make sure guests have a safe ride home.

Last year's Super Bowl Sunday saw 28 crashes related to alcohol — resulting in two fatalities. For the past three years, Virginia officials say there has been at least one death on Super Bowl Sunday connected to an alcohol-related crash.

Further, VSP says 23 drivers were charged for driving while intoxicated during the 2023 Super Bowl.

“We understand people want to celebrate the game with family and friends, and that those celebrations may include alcohol,” said Col. Gary Settle, Superintendent of VSP. “Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or illicit drugs puts yourself and others at risk. Avoid this by having a plan in advance that involves a sober driver or alternative transportation.”

Anyone caught drinking and driving could face jail time, lose their driver's license and/or vehicle, and have to pay hefty fines and fees.
