Prosecutors choose not to move ahead with rape case against Isle of Wight County sheriff's deputy

A grand jury indicted Julian Evans, an operations commander for the sheriff's office, in March 2020. The charge against him was nolle prossed in April 2021.

SMITHFIELD, Va. — Online court records show that the rape case against a sheriff's deputy will not move forward.

A grand jury indicted Julian Evans, a captain with the Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Office, in March 2020 for a rape that was to have taken place in August 2019.

In September 2019, Virginia State Police said it was investigating Evans, an operations commander for the sheriff's office. Investigators didn't specify what the nature of the crime that was at the center of the investigation was.

Evans had been on administrative duty while the investigation took place.

The Sussex County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office was handling the prosecution.

On April 12, 2021, the charge against Evans was nolle prossed, meaning that prosecutors chose not to move ahead with their case.
