Virginia mourns the loss of former first lady Roxane Gatling Gilmore

Here's how she will be remembered.

VIRGINIA, USA — The Commonwealth of Virginia is mourning the loss of Roxane Gatling Gilmore, the former first lady, who died Wednesday morning after a prolonged illness. Her family shared the sad news, expressing their deep sorrow and honoring her remarkable life.

She was the wife of Jim Gilmore, who served as Virginia's governor from 1998 to 2002.

A native of Suffolk, Roxane lived a life dedicated to education, public service, and family, according to her loved ones. She graduated from Suffolk High School and went on to earn her B.A. in history, classics, and anthropology, as well as an M.A. in ancient history from the University of Virginia in 1978. It was during her time at the University of Virginia that she met and married Jim.

Her academic career began in 1992, teaching at Henrico and Chesterfield County Public Schools. Roxane later became a professor of classics at Randolph Macon College, where she inspired students through her courses on Latin, Women in Ancient Literature, Roman History, Greek History, Epic Poetry, and Roman Britain.

As first lady of Virginia, Roxane Gatling Gilmore supported numerous initiatives and advocated for the betterment of her community. 

She leaves behind two sons, Jay and Ashton, and a granddaughter, who will continue to carry forward her legacy. Her family expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of support and condolences from friends, colleagues, and the wider community.

In a message from her family, they shared:

“Dear Friends and Family of Roxane Gatling Gilmore, it's with a heavy heart that we write this post. Roxane passed away this morning after a long illness. She leaves behind a legacy of dedication, love, and unwavering commitment to education and community service.”

As Virginia comes together to honor Roxane Gatling Gilmore's memory, her life serves as a testament to the profound impact one individual can have through dedication, compassion, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge and service.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin also released a statement in response to her death.

"Suzanne and I are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend, former First Lady Roxane Gilmore. Our prayers are with Governor Gilmore, his sons Jay and Ashton, their families, and Roxane’s extended family. Virginia has lost a wonderful woman who touched the lives of many Virginians."
