Emporia woman killed in crash involving Amtrak train

VSP said train crossing arms were lowered when the woman attempted to drive around them and cross the train tracks.

SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. — An Emporia woman is dead after her car was hit by an Amtrak train in Sussex County Friday.

According to Virginia State Police (VSP), it happened just before 1 p.m. in the town of Jarrett. Arnetta Johnson Lucas, 67, was heading eastbound on Grigg Avenue when she drove around a stopped vehicle at a train crossing.

VSP said the train crossing arms were lowered, but she attempted to drive around them and cross the train tracks. That's when she was hit by the train, heading northbound at approximately 70 mph.

Lucas' car was pushed about 100 yards from the collision, and Lucas died upon impact, VSP said.

The Amtrak train had passengers aboard, but no injuries from passengers or crew members have been reported.
