CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The community of Cape Charles on Virginia's Eastern Shore has been shaken this weekend after a woman was shot and killed.
On Saturday around 5:00 p.m. there was a report of shots fired on the 500 block of Tazewell Avenue, authorities confirm. Cape Charles Police Officers responded quickly and the suspect was taken into custody around 5:07 p.m.
The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.
The victim has been identified as Jane McKinley of Cape Charles. EMS pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.
Anthony Mercado, 25, is facing several charges in connection with this incident, including second-degree murder, reckless handling of a firearm, and malicious discharge of a firearm in a dwelling. Additional charges are likely.
The investigation is ongoing, and the family asks for privacy during this challenging time.
