CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is holding public comment for input on a proposal that would transform an old, unused rail bed in Northampton County into a shared-use path.
VDOT said the proposal would consist of two project segments extending from the towns of Cape Charles to Cheriton.
One 2.17-mile segment will start in Cape Charles from the intersection of Fig Street and Mason Avenue and end at the shopping center located near the intersection of Route 13 (Lankford Highway) and Country Place. The other 1.4-mile Cheriton segment will continue northward from Route 13 and Country Place to Route 639 (Sunnyside Road).
It's part of a larger Eastern Shore Rail to Trail project, which aims to create about 49 miles of a primarily flat and straight right of way. It'd create an opportunity for a shared-use path connecting communities, businesses, and state/federal parks throughout Northampton and Accomack counties on Virginia's Eastern Shore.
The public comment period ends on August 7, 2024. Comments regarding the document should be mailed to Mr. Owen Sitler, Virginia Department of Transportation, 7511 Burbage Drive, Suffolk, VA 23435. You can also send an email to Owen.Sitler@VDOT.Virginia.gov. Please reference “Eastern Shore Rail to Trail CE” in the subject line.
