A man is charged with DUI and manslaughter after the SUV he was driving crashed on the Eastern Shore Christmas Eve morning, killing a 17-year-old passenger.
Around 2:45 a.m., Virginia State Police were called to an accident in the 23000 block of Lankford Highway in the Cape Charles area, Sgt. Michelle Anaya said.
Calvin E. Berryhil Jr. was driving a 2003 Saturn VUE, when the SUV ran off the road, overturned and hit several trees, Anaya said.
Trevonne A. Stith, 17, a passenger in the SUV, died at the scene. Four other passengers — three juveniles and one woman — were also in the SUV during the accident.
Stith's mother, Tracy, said her son's nickname was Duke. She said her son had only been 17-years-old for a few hours before the car crash.
"He just laying there, so vulnerable," described Stith. "And I'm just hitting him saying, 'Duke! Duke! Duke! No, not my baby. Not my baby."
Family members said Stith loved history and basketball and wanted to play professionally. They described him as the glue to the family.
"He was the biggest part of the family," said 12-year-old sister Tyjanique Campell. "We never planned on how we was going to live without him."
The three juveniles were able to run to a nearby residence to ask for help, Anaya said.
They were taken to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters with minor injuries.
The woman, Tracy Shavonn Stith, was taken to Norfolk Sentara Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
Tracy Stith is the mother of the teen who died in the crash, Anaya said.
Berryhill, 40, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, manslaughter and misdemeanor endangerment/neglect.
