CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. (Delmarva Now) -- Chink-o-teeg, shink-a-teeg, shink-o-tig. There are probably as many pronunciations of Chincoteague as there are ponies on Assateague, but which way is right?
Color Me Chincoteague, the maker of a coloring book featuring scenes from the island, took it upon themselves to find the answer.
The consensus?
"There was a consensus that the first syllable should be emphasized (SHINK-uh-teeg rather than shink-uh-TEEG), but people seemed divided over 'tig' vs. 'teeg,'" Color Me Chincoteague said on their Facebook page.
