Flooding wreaks havoc in Accomack

ACCOMAC, Va. (WVEC/Delmarva) -- Heavy rains and thunderstorms made their way across the area Friday morning, and the southern tip of the Eastern Shore faced floods and hail.

Parksley and Accomac in Accomack County were impassible Friday afternoon, because of a thunderstorm that has lasted almost two hours without letting up.

It took just a few hours of rain for Yvonne Harris' father's home to be under water and ruined.

"It was terrible. The sky opened up and it poured down, rained so much I couldn't get to my house," said Harris.

In more than 40 years living in Accomack County, just off of Langston Highway, the 88-year-old man has never had to be rescued from his own home until Friday.

"I was worried and I was scared because I couldn't get to him," said Harris.

Harris called the Onley Fire Rescue, who came to the house on Tyler Lane and pulled him out, along with Harris' niece. The fire rescue posted a video of the rescue to their Facebook, which Harris said she's watched over and over.

"I saw the video. It was terrible. Unbelievable. The water came high. It's come high before but never came into the house," she told 13News Now.

"It just covered the yard. It's never came up as far as the steps so this is the worst flooding we've seen in this area," Harris' cousin, Gail Scarborough, said.

The water damaged all of the floors, furniture, and mold has started to grow in some spots. Despite losing so much in a such a short amount of time, Harris walks away with a positive attitude because her father didn't lose his life and was uninjured.

"I feel blessed. I'm still here," Harris said.

Rescue workers have also been called to Riverside Shore Rehabilitation Center in Parksley because of reported flooding in the building.

Courthouse Avenue in front of the Virginia Department of Transportation office in Accomac is completely covered.

Scores of automobiles have pulled off Route 13 and traffic is being directed into Parksley because lanes of Route 13 South at Parksley Road (Route 176) are blocked.

As of 3:30 p.m., backups extend two miles. Drivers should expect delays.

Radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the area, with 4 to 6 inches of rain having already fallen by 3 p.m. Additional rainfall of 2 to 3 inches are possible in the area.

Additionally, a line of strong thunderstorms will affect Northampton and south central Accomack counties, the weather service said.

Wind gusts in excess of 30 miles per hour and half-inch hail and rainfall of up to 1 inch are possible with these storms.
