PARKSLEY, Va. — A large fire started in a vacant house on the Eastern Shore Sunday night, officials said.

According to Onancock Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mike Rydberg, the fire happened at an unoccupied house on 20013 Bailey Road in Greenbush, southeast of Parklsey. Fire departments from Parksley, Onancock, Melfa, Bloxom and Tasley were dispatched shortly before 9:45 p.m.

Responding firefighters identified the situation as a "defensive operation" due to the home's partial collapse and the fire's size.

Crews operated on the scene for nearly two hours before extinguishing the flames, Rydberg wrote in an e-mail.

He said the house was vacant and the fire was "suspicious in nature." No one was hurt in the fire.
