CHINCOTEAGUE, Va., (WVEC) -- Construction of Chincoteague's newest attraction, Maui Jack's Water Park, is nearing completion, with a soft opening on Memorial Day weekend and a grand opening planned for June 15 at 3 p.m.
"This is such an exciting adventure for the town of Chincoteague and for tourism, and that's what really fuels us," said Kim Wooten of Maui Jacks, speaking at the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce annual luncheon on May 22.
Ground broke on the park in November 2017. It is adjacent to the Chincoteague Island KOA campground, a sister property of owner Blue Water Development.
The business venture has partnered with more than 30 Chincoteague businesses to promote the water park and businesses, "and that continues to grow every day," Wooten said.
She touted employment opportunities the new venture is bringing to town.
"We have the most amazing staff of locals — all locals — on our team," she said.
A few components of the water park were still being put in place last week, but others, including the Lazy River and the Tiki Bar, are ready, Wooten said.
The park features three tube slides, two racing slides, a lazy river, a splash area, cabanas, a beach area, concessions, food trucks and a gift shop.
The park will be Hawaiian-themed, from the names and colors of the attractions to the uniforms, music and 70 palm trees that will be planted, according to a news release. The Jack Spot will offer a beach bar and food, and there will be cabanas available for rent. A 150-car parking lot is also being formed.
