COURTLAND, Va. — A Southampton County deputy sheriff and a worker with Southampton Public Works are both recovering after the deputy ran into a Southampton Public Works roll-off truck used for trash collection Friday morning.
According to a spokesperson for Southampton County Sheriff’s Office, this happened at around 10:50 a.m. on Meherrin Road near White House Road in front of the Courtland Refuse Collection Site. The deputy was on duty and driving a Sheriff's Office vehicle when the crash took place.
No information about what may have led to the crash was provided, and responsibility for investigating the crash was turned over to Virginia State Police.
The deputy, who was alone in the vehicle at the time, as well as one of the occupants of the Public Works truck, were transported to a local hospital where they were treated for minor injuries. There was one other person in the truck, but that person didn't require any medical attention.
Meherrin Road was closed in both directions for about an hour and a half while the crash was investigated and cleared.
