GREENSVILLE COUNTY, Va. — An 80-year-old Emporia woman died on Tuesday after she became entrapped inside an overturned car in Greensville County, Virginia State Police (VSP) said.

Merle Thorpe was heading south on Low Ground Road when she crossed into the northbound lanes and eventually off the road, VSP said. Her Chevrolet Impala struck a tree stump, causing the vehicle to overturn and entrap her.

Thorpe was rushed to Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center with injuries considered "serious life-threatening." She was then airlifted to Chippenham Hospital where she ultimately died.

There were no passengers or other vehicles involved in the crash.

The initial investigation revealed Thorpe was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The investigation is ongoing, however, VSP said neither alcohol nor speed contributed to the crash.
