RICHMOND, Va. — A Virginia student's artwork could appear on thousands of thank you cards for the Virginia Lottery's Thank a Teacher Art Contest.
Starting January 2, 2019, K through 12 students attending Virginia's public schools can create and submit artwork that could appear on thank you notes for teachers in the Commonwealth. The notes will be sent out during National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6-10.
The contest goes until February 1, 2019, and all submissions will be accepted online. The winners will be selected from three categories, elementary school, middle school, and high school. The winners of each category will get $1,000 for their school’s art department, and a $150 gift card.
“Last year we were blown away by the talent of some of Virginia’s youngest artists, and we can’t wait to bring the program back for a second year,” said Virginia Lottery Executive Director Kevin Hall in a press release. “It’s our mission to benefit Virginia’s K-12 public schools, and these special, personalized thank-you notes are another way to celebrate our remarkable state educators.”
The Thank a Teacher campaign is organized by the Virginia Lottery in partnership with the Virginia PTA and Virginia Tourism Corporation. To date, Virginians distributed more than 100,000 thank-you notes, with some teachers also winning prizes like Virginia-themed vacations.
The artwork submitted by students will be judged by a panel of members of the arts community in Virginia. the winning designs will be released in March.
