NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- We're verifying a question sent in by a 13News Now viewer.
Joan wants to know if there's any truth to the claim that if your car does not pass inspection, you can only drive your car home or to get it fixed.
To verify, we reached out to Virginia State Police. Sergeant Kevin Satterfield II told us a rejection sticker is valid for 15 days after the initial date of inspection. You will need to fix whatever issue caused the rejection within that time and get another inspection if you want to keep driving your car after the 15 days.
While the rejection sticker does not come with any travel restrictions, drivers are still legally responsible for any defect. That means if your exhaust is messed up and police notice, for example, you could still end up with a ticket for the exhaust problem, not the rejection sticker.
So we can Verify the claim that you can't drive around with a rejection sticker is False.
