USNS Spearhead leaves for humanitarian mission south of US

The ship is heading out in support of an operation that helps to provide health services to people.

JEB LITTLE CREEK-FORT STORY, Va. (WVEC) -- USNS Spearhead left Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story to support Continuing Promise 2018.

The ship was supposed to deploy last week, but an engineering issue delayed the Spearhead's departure until Tuesday.

Continuing Promise 2018 is a humanitarian mission that helps provide health services to people in need as well as veterinary services.

More than 200 sailors on board the Spearhead will spend about four months in Central and South America.

The Navy said the delayed departure should impact the mission.

This will be the second time the Spearhead will participate in Continuing Promise.
