ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WVEC) -- One of two murder suspects in Isle of Wight County has pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder.

Following his plea, Kareem Jamar Mitchell was sentenced to two concurrent life sentences in prison on Wednesday morning.

By pleading guilty, Mitchell avoids capital murder charges in the September 2017 deaths of 80-year-old Nancy Starnes and her 58-year-old son Kenneth Starnes. At the time, deputies described the crime as a "brutal slaying."

Another suspect, Richard Holmes, is awaiting the grand jury on charges of second-degree murder.
