Students at Virginia Beach Detention center learn to code

Coding is reaching new people in Virginia Beach. A national organization that teaches computer science taught their skill at the Virginia Beach Juvenile Detention Center.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) — An in-demand skill is reaching new fingertips because a national organization that teaches coding is branching out to students at the Virginia Beach Juvenile Detention Center.

"It's available to any student that's out there, but for our kids hopefully we spark something in them, and when they leave it's there for them to continue," explained principal Charles Foster.

CodeHS is a free online website that allows students to learn computer science for students all over the world. The company said Virginia Beach Detention Center is the only one in the Commonwealth they are visiting.

"I was nervous because I thought it was going to be hard,” a student said.

On Thursday, dozens of students at the center learned how to code. They were able to create a meme, a song, or a sports game.

A student explained, "I feel like I could do it, like harder ones than the ones that they gave us."

The goal is for students to understand that computer science and that the skill is universal and can be used in any field.
