RICHMOND, Va. (WVEC) -- Virginia state inspection stickers will no longer be placed at the bottom, center of your windshield.
As of Jan. 1, 2018, the stickers will move to the bottom, left corner.
State police said the change is a result of new crash technology in cars.
The crash avoidance technology often uses the center part of the windshield to detect a possible impact.
Officials said the current placement of the sticker could interfere with that technology.
Virginia State Police Safety Division released this statement in regards to the switch:
The core mission of the Virginia Safety Inspection Program is to promote highway safety and the crash avoidance technology is another tool provided by manufacturers to ensure vehicles operated on the roadways are safe at all times,” said Capt. R.C. Maxey Jr., Virginia State Police Safety Division Commander. “Therefore, we immediately began evaluating the situation and set forth to make the necessary changes to the Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection Manual, which governs the placement of the safety inspection sticker on all vehicles."
State inspection stickers will remain in their current position, but once a vehicle is inspected and issued a 2019 sticker, the new placement will take effect.
