Proposal intends to revitalize downtown Hampton

Downtown Hampton could be getting a facelift very soon. City council plans to sell property in the downtown area and a developer plans to come in.

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) --The landscape in downtown Hampton could soon be changing.

City council will vote on a proposal to sell 16-acres of land and revitalize the area. WVS Cos. and Saunders + Crouse Architects’ proposal includes retail shops, office space, apartments or condos, townhouses and a restaurant.

The city also plans to transfer about 5,000 square feet of carousel park to the EDA. The EDA plans to lease the land for a proposed restaurant.

The proposal isn't new. City leaders have been working with proposed developers for two years to do something to the downtown area.

The city, Hampton Redevelopment, and Housing Authority and the Economic Development Authority co-own the properties.

Mayor Donnie Tuck said they've been purchasing these properties over the last 12 years. He says it took some time to hammer out the final legal agreements to sell the property.

“There were some hiccups on the part of the city and developer but now we're ready to forward,” Tuck said. “For someone to come in and build from the ground up is a major accomplishment.”
