NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Lionsbridge FC, a new professional soccer team on the Virginia Peninsula is expected to launch in 2018.
Lionsbridge FC is named after the nearly 90-year-old Lions Bridge in Newport News.
Co-founder Mike Vest says the vision behind Lionsbridge FC is to give families affordable options during the spring and summer to watch high-quality soccer.
“We found there's a great appetite for high-level soccer here on the peninsula,” Vest says.
There are two potential leagues where Lionsbridge FC could end up, the National Premier Soccer League or the Premier Development League.
Vest is more than confident professional soccer is going to do well in Newport News, because it's working in small cities in states like New York and North Carolina.
There’s already a professional team based in Virginia Beach.
Vest says right now they're finalizing both league affiliation as well as where they're going to play their home games. He says the goal is to add to the amazing spirit which already exists on the Peninsula.
The team is asking for help deciding on a logo.
