Problem leads to 1,500 gallon sewage overflow in Yorktown

Imagine coming home to find 1,5000 gallons of sewage spilled into the ditch near your house. That happened to several people in York County. 13News Now reached out to York County on what caused the big mess.

YORKTOWN, Va. (WVEC) – Concern was at an all-time high for several Yorktown homeowners Monday afternoon.

According to York County Public Works, their contractor’s by-pass pump for the Hollywood Sanitary Sewer Project did not operate properly Monday, which caused a sanitary sewer overflow in the manhole located in the cul-de-sac of Harwood Drive impacting 100, 101, 102 and 103 Harwood Drive roadside ditches and a ditch that runs between 101 and 103 Harwood Drive.

The estimated volume of the sanitary sewer overflow was 1,500 gallons. The contractor spread lime over the impacted area.

John Carpenter was working in his garage when his wife called his attention to the big mess.

“It was a very light sewer smell,” Carpenter says. “I was concerned because with the heat I figured it (the smell) was going to get stronger.”

Public Works officials reported the sanitary sewer overflow to Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

As of 4:30 Monday afternoon, there was no sanitary sewer in the roadside ditches or the downstream ditch. The roadside ditch was still moist, but the entire impacted area had been limed.
