PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The largest Portsmouth Police Department class of recruits was unveiled on Monday.
Class 19-A is a very diverse class with a total of 20 recruits, 13 men and 7 women. The last class that graduated in November had 16, and that was considered the largest class in the department's history.
All recruits will undergo 16-weeks of basic police training at the Hampton Roads Criminal Justice Training Academy (HRCJTA) in Newport News. The program challenges recruits, and it provides them with the basic skills required to be a certified police officer.
Training kicked off on Monday for the new class.
