PORTSMOUTH Portsmouth City Council members will meet Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. to discuss an interim replacement for Mayor James Holley after he was recalled by a 2-1 margin.
The final vote was 68%-32% in favor of recall.
By mid-afternoon Wednesday, the city's electoral board had certified the results and no date has been set for Circuit Judge Dean Sword to receive the results.
Holley's name plate was off the council deis.His name on the light-up voting board has been replaced with 'VACANT.'
Martha Ann Creecy, who challenged and narrowly lost election to James Holley in 2008, has offered to serve as interim mayor.She told 13Newsshe 'absolutely will not run' for mayor in November, when a special election will be held to fill the remainder of Holley's term.
Officials in Portsmouth said Tuesday that voter turnout was heavierthan it was for the May municipal election.
Holley, 83, had the optionto step down after petitions calling for his removal from office were validated.
The mayor came under fire after it was revealedhis city-paid assistant performed personal tasks on city time.
City Council reprimanded Holley and fined him.
Holley said he serves at the pleasure of voters and they should decide his fate.
Mayor Holley was recalled in 1987 and returned to politics, winning themayor's seatin 1996.
