York County School Board searching for District 2 replacement

The York County school board is forced to fill a vacancy once again. They're soliciting letters of interest and resumes from persons who wish to be considered to fill a vacancy on the Board for District 2.

YORK COUNTY, Va. — The York County School Board is now searching for a replacement for board member Michael Anderson.

Anderson resigned Wednesday due to increased work responsibilities associated with a recent promotion.

“On behalf of the School Board and the school division, I would like to thank Mr. Anderson for his service to District 2 residents, our students and staff and our community,” York County School Board chair Jimmy Richardson said.

This is not the first time school board members are searching for a replacement for a District 2 representative.

In 2017, the District 2 representative for the school board, Cindy Kirschke, resigned & moved away. Due to Kirschke’s move, Dr. Talbot Vivian was appointed in July.

Though he initially intended to seek the position through the special election, he ultimately did not due to other work conflicts. Michael Anderson was elected in the November special election and took office then.

“I think the biggest thing is the time commitment,” Richardson said. “If you are applying for this, understand there is some committal of time."

In 2016, the York County School Board District 4 representative, R. Page Minter passed away. Todd Mathes was appointed in May, James Richardson won the special election in November and took office then.

The names of all individuals who submit for consideration will be released on February 21.

When there is a vacancy, the board has 45 days to replace, or fill, the position due to a Virginia Code requirement. Afterward, the board will hold a public hearing to receive comment.

There will be a public hearing by the end of this month to fill a vacancy on the Board for District 2. There is a regular school board meeting on February 25th and that is also the time citizens can give their input.

By March 22nd, the school board is required to have someone in the District 2 seat.

All seats are up for election this November.
