Tidewater Peninsula Baptist Association collecting supplies to send to Tennessee

While Tennessee is on the road to recovery, people in Hampton Roads are doing whatever they can to help.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Help for Tennessee is coming from all over including Hampton Roads.

More than two dozen people are dead after tornadoes pummeled the Nashville area. Now several churches are coming together to help those hours away.

They're the Tidewater Peninsula Baptist Association, comprised of dozens of churches in Hampton Roads.

Pastor Willard Maxwell of New Beech Grove Baptist Church in Newport News is one of the co-moderators. The group is using his church as the hub for all donations and supplies.

“Anytime there's a crisis we try to reach out,” Maxwell said. “You can bring undergarments, pampers, toiletries, food, donate money, cleaning supplies.”

This is not the first time the Tidewater Peninsula Baptist Association has helped communities outside of Hampton Roads.

The TPBA has sent supplies to places like Flint, Michigan, the Carolinas after Hurricane Florence, Houston, and recently the Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian.

The group is collecting until March 18.

Maxwell said they're partnering with the humanitarian aid World Vision in Tennessee as well as a pastor in Nashville to get the supplies to people in need.

“You need to treat people like you want to be treated,” Maxwell said. “God says treat others like you would want them to treat you, so love your brother as you love yourself, and your brother and your sister is anyone you come in contact with or in crisis.”

You can drop off supplies New Beech Grove (361 Beechmont Drive, Newport News) between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday.

You can mail donations to InTouch CDC at 359 Beechmont Drive, Newport News, Virginia, 23608 or via PayPal.
