Parents of Tabb teen killed in crash create foundation, fundraiser for scholarships and more

It’s been three months since three York County teens died in a car crash. The mother of one of them is starting a foundation in her son’s name to help others.

YORK COUNTY, Va. — A hardworking athlete, compassionate, someone who aspired to do great things.

That's how Michael and Michelle Koontz describe their oldest son, Logan.

“He always said I don’t have to be perfect, I just have to be better than everyone else,” Michelle Koontz said. “Logan's name will always live on.”

Logan was one of three teens who tragically died in a car accident in October, less a mile from Tabb High School. The 16-year-old sophomore did it all. He played football, track, basketball and was in the ROTC program at Tabb High School.

“It's devastating to lose your 16-year-old child who aspired to be great, so we're struggling as parents,” Koontz said.

Michelle Koontz said her son impacted not just the Tabb community, but all of Hampton Roads. She wanted his memory to live on. She also wanted his friends and the community to feel a part of Logan's life.

She created the LL12 foundation. It's a fundraiser for scholarships, football camps, equipment for athletes and more.

“What better way to pull the kids in than help with fundraising efforts so they can have a sense of pride,” Koontz said.

As of two days ago, Michelle said they raised enough to already provide one $1000 scholarship and pay for three camp fees.

“Until you go through something tragic like this you don't realize how many people care and step in to do things for you,” Koontz said.

The fundraiser is in Logan's name. His parents say the foundation has given them a purpose, and it's allowed them to work towards a goal like Logan would have done.

“I think he would be honored, and he would love the fact that we're reaching out to the entire community,” Michael Koontz said.
