MIDDLESEX, Va. (WVEC) -- One person is dead following an accident Thursday night in Middlesex County, Virginia State Police said.

The crash happened around 9:15 p.m. on General Puller Highway. Investigators say a Middlesex County deputy saw a 2012 Dodge Durango going 75 mph in a 55 mph zone. The deputy tried to make a traffic stop, but lost sight of the vehicle.

When the deputy did catch up with the Durango, the vehicle had crashed at the intersection of General Puller Highway and Stampers Bay Road.

Investigators said it appears the Durango had crossed over the center lane, ran off the roadway into a ditch, struck a culvert and overturned.

The driver, 27-year-old Aaron Zalocha, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Police said Zalocha was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Alcohol is not a factor in the accident, police said.
