Two people killed in Labor Day weekend crash on the Eastern Shore

The crash happened Sunday morning in the town of Eastville, according to Virginia State Police.

EASTVILLE, Va. — Two people died in a fiery crash on the Eastern Shore Sunday morning.

The crash was reported at 7:38 a.m. on Route 13/Lankford Highway at Stumptown Road, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya. That’s in the town of Eastville in Northampton County.

According to police, a preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a 2022 Toyota Rava, 79-year-old Arthur Wilmer Smith of Norristown, Pennsylvania, was traveling northbound when he ran off the roadway, hitting a ditch and a culvert.

Smith and his wife, 77-year-old Susan Alice Smith, were trapped in the vehicle, which became fully engulfed in flames. They both died from their injuries.

Virginia State Police said neither speed nor alcohol were contributing factors in the accident.
