Weird jellyfish-like blobs washing ashore in the Outer Banks

Experts say they're not jellyfish. In fact, they're more closely related to humans.

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. — If you've visited the Outer Banks you might have come across these odd little blobs.

Wildlife experts said these jellyfish-like critters are harmless and they are more closely related to humans than jellyfish. They're called salps, and they are in the area because of phytoplankton blooms which are their food source.

The Kill Devil Hills Ocean Rescue posted a photo on Facebook of the clear creatures. They have a little black dot in the center of them which is their digestive system!

"Although salps appear similar to jellyfish because of their simple body form and planktonic behavior, they are chordates: animals with dorsal nerve cords, related to vertebrates, animals with backbones," experts with the Kill Devil Hills Ocean Rescue said on Facebook. "This means they are more closely related to humans than jellyfish!"
