Severe storms, heavy rain flood Elizabeth City streets

The heavy rain and severe storms that moved through the region flooded the streets of Elizabeth City, making roads impassable and prompting some school closings.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — A day after heavy rain and wind moved into Elizabeth City, flooding remains on several roads.

On Friday, a car sat in the middle of West Church Street for most of the day after a driver got stuck. Robert Manseau said the car belongs to his fiancé.

“She went down the hill and just started coasting and the water picked her up and she went for a little ride," Manseau said.

Manseau said his fiancé is okay, but she came home drenched. He’s hoping her car is not totaled.

“It ain’t looking too good. When she rode in it, the lights flickered and all the lights came on,” he said.

Manseau said he called to get the car towed. He said they can’t come until the water goes down. Down the street, Robert Gregory sat in his car for more than an hour waiting for water to recede in his neighborhood.

“I’m used to it. When it rains like that, you either come out or you stay in," Gregory remarked. "Today I decided to come out."

The high water even forced Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Public Schools to close Friday. School officials said roads are impassable and high tide could increase flooding.

“You just have to deal with it. It ain’t going nowhere and we are not going nowhere, so we have to deal with it,” Gregory explained.
