RALEIGH, N.C. — Nearly 65,000 North Carolinians cast provisional ballots in the 2024 election, according to new numbers released by the NC State Board of Elections.
Provisional ballots are given to voters whose eligibility to vote on Election Day is uncertain, such as being unable to show an acceptable photo ID when voting.
It then falls on the voter to resolve the issue that led them to use a provisional ballot. They have until 5 p.m. the day before North Carolina's county canvass; for this year's election, that deadline is 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 14.
If the county board of elections determines the voter is eligible, the provisional ballot is then counted. If the voter is eligible for some races on the ballot but not others, only the eligible contests will be counted for that voter.
These ballots get added to the election results during the 10-day canvass period following Election Day.
