KILL DEVIL HILLS, Va. (WVEC) -- Doris Yonuts has been charged in the death of a 12-year-old girl that was killed after being struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle in Kill Devil Hills.
According to a friend of the girl's father, Bri Blumenthal was hit by a car while riding her bicycle when the driver of the car was "blinded by the sunlight and ran the red light."
Blumenthal was flown to Norfolk Sentara hospital, where she later died.
She was peaceful and surrounded by loved ones when she succumbed to her injuries. I want you all to know this is not the end of her journey. We decided as a family that the most positive thing we could do was wait till there was no brain activity but kept her on the respirator, so her organs were the most viable and she could help the most people. -Bri's father, Scotty
Witnesses tell police the driver ran through a steady red light when the girl was hit.
Yonuts is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to stop at a red light.
