Cape Hatteras National Seashore provides updates on the cleanup of 3 collapsed houses in the OBX

Authorities said they've cleaned up over 20 miles of beach, but they've also discovered medical waste washing up on the beaches of the tri-villages.

MANTEO, N.C. — After three houses collapsed into the ocean in Rodanthe in the span of four days, Cape Hatteras National Seashore provided another update on the cleanup process.

The beach along G A Kohler Court, the road the three houses were on, through Sea Haven Drive in Rodanthe is currently shut down to the public, officials said. That stretch of beach is approximately 0.4 of a mile.

Some medical waste has also washed up on shore on the site of the house collapses, following a trend over the past month where other medical waste was discovered on the beaches of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. The U.S. Coast Guard in North Carolina was notified, Seashore authorities said. They said didn't find any medical waste anywhere else along the Outer Banks.

If you see medical waste, stay away from it, but you should report any sightings by email to Seashore officials at caha_public_affairs@nps.gov

Due to the remaining debris and the apparent presence of medical waste, Seashore authorities said visitors should wear hard-soled shoes from Rodanthe to "many miles to the south."

Most large pieces of debris have been removed from the beach, but small pieces of debris are still present in smaller quantities.

Seashore employees have been working on cleanup from Sept. 22 to Thursday morning, removing over 60 pickup trucks-worth of home debris. There is no timeline to the project since more debris can wash up or be unearthed by sand.
