COROLLA, N.C. — A beloved local icon has passed away, according to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund (CWHF).
In a social media post made by the rescue nonprofit, CWHF said Raymond the mule was euthanized on October 30 due to a "small scrotal hernia that occluded the affected loops of his small intestine."
Raymond lived to be in his late 20s, CWHF estimated, and was known for his "fierce" personality. He was a mule but reportedly lived like other wild horses.
"He had a harem of mares, raised foals (even though they weren’t biologically his - mules are sterile), and fought other stallions for territory," CWHF said.
"He was also known by locals as Jack, Rebel, Burrito, and probably a few other choice nicknames over the years," CWHF said. "We will remember him fondly and miss him dearly. It’s way too quiet around here without him hollering at us."
More on Raymond's life can be found on the CWHF Facebook page.
