BARCO, N.C. — More than a dozen Republicans seeking to succeed the late U.S. Rep. Walter Jones Jr. are making their case to party activists in northeastern North Carolina at a special meeting.
Local GOP leaders say 15 of the 17 Republicans who filed to run in the 3rd Congressional District primary plan to attend a public forum Tuesday evening at Currituck County Middle School, beginning at 6:30.
Republicans, Democrats, and Libertarians hold primary elections April 30, with runoffs July 9 if a leading primary candidate doesn't get above 30 percent of the vote. The general election would be Sept. 10 if any primary runoff is required.
Jones died in February after representing the 3rd District for 24 years. The district covers all or a portion of 17 counties stretching to Greenville, Jacksonville and Nags Head.
