HATTERAS, N.C. — Sunday's coastal storm has led to ocean overwash closing part of Highway NC12 on North Carolina's Outer Banks.

The impacted area includes the north end of Ocracoke Island and between Hatteras and Frisco in Dare County. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) said multiple dune breaches and severe ocean overwash north of Hatteras Village have closed the road between Sandpiper Lane and Elizabeth Drive.

Additionally, the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry route has temporarily suspended operations due to the weather conditions.

Crews are assessing damage to the road and clearing away the sand that has blown across NC12. NCDOT officials said the remainder of NC12 is open and passable, but drivers are asked to drive carefully as they may still encounter standing rainwater and blown sand.

NCDOT hopes to have the roadway back open sometime on Monday.
