On their Facebook page, the National Park explained that "Sea Turtles are cold-blooded reptiles. During the winter months, when temperatures plummet, their body temperature synchronizes with their surroundings. This leaves them lethargic (or cold-stunned), and their bodily functions slow down. They can struggle to lift their heads above water to breathe, risking drowning."

When temperatures drop, volunteers and seashore biologists monitor the shorelines and transport them to the STAR center.

If you see a turtle call 252-216-6892 to report any sightings.
