OCRACOKE, N.C. — Visitor access will be limited near Ocracoke Light Station for nearly a year while repair work is underway at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, according to the National Park Service (NPS).

The $3.6 million project will fund repairs to the Double Keepers' Quarters (DKQ) and other structures near the Ocracoke Lighthouse.

NPS said construction efforts will include the removal of shrubs and saplings growing near the house, adding construction fencing, demolishing the interior to raise the house, and reconstructing the chimney stacks.

Temporary closures will be in place for the boardwalk and lighthouse while crews install an accessible pathway from the existing boardwalk to the DKQ.

The parking lot in front of the light station will be closed for an extended time. During this time, visitors must park in the gravel parking lot northeast of the light station.

Many of the larger live oak trees determined to be in fair or good health will be preserved, officials said. However, eight of the 28 trees were determined to be in an "advanced state of decline."

The NPS said Ocracoke Light Station was built in 1823 and consists of the historic Ocracoke Lighthouse, DKQ, and five other structures, all of which suffered wind and flood damage from Hurricane Dorian in 2019.
