New study on erosion and transportation systems on Ocracoke Island

An information session to talk about the project will be held at Ocracoke Community Center on September 4.

OCRACOKE, N.C. — Researchers are beginning a study to evaluate how erosion may impact transportation systems on Ocracoke Island.

They say strategies that have been used for decades to maintain NC 12 may have inadvertently contributed to the low elevations and narrow island widths that cause disruptions to traffic, like ocean overwash.

An information session to talk about the project will be held at Ocracoke Community Center in two weeks, on Wednesday, September 4 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Officials the results from initial modeling and public feedback will be incorporated into a second year of research, and a second information session is planned for the summer of 2025.

More information about the study, including additional ways to provide feedback, are available online.
