'They've helped us, now we help them': OBX community rallies help for Western NC town

Volunteers in Duck packed a twenty-six foot truck full of supplies that will be delivered to Bakersville, North Carolina.

DUCK, N.C. — The Outer Banks has weathered a hurricane, or two, and without fail those who live there say the rest of the state has always come to their aid. Now, the tables have turned.

Dozens of volunteers loaded up a twenty-six foot truck in Duck, North Carolina Thursday to show their care for the devastation that has occurred in western parts of the state following Hurricane Helene.

"Seeing those pictures of Lake Lure in Asheville ... it is absolutely heartbreaking, and so I would have done this anyway, but because this is the community of Duck, this is the kind of thing that we do," said Kevin Lingard, a Duck councilman and volunteer.

The plan is to deliver a truck-full of supplies to Bakersville, North Carolina. It is a small town with less than 500 residents, and it's roughly an hour north of Asheville.

Duck Police Chief Jeff Ackerman said he will personally deliver the supplies.

"We are not exactly sure what we are in for, but that doesn't matter," Ackerman said. "In fact, I was just talking to the gentleman who owns the truck and I told him please be prepared for when we get there. We may very well be sleeping in the back of the truck because the one thing we don't want to do is tax resources that they need out there."

Already, four Duck police officers are in Bakersville patrolling the grounds and trying to help clear the debris left behind by the storm.

It's unclear at this time how long they will stay there, but Ackerman said the recovery efforts have just begun and Duck will continue to show their support.
