New NCDOT ferry nears completion

MANNS HARBOR, N.C. — The North Carolina Ferry Division's newest ferry is nearly complete.

NCDOT tweeted out a picture Monday, saying the new vehicle ferry, named Rodanthe, is currently under construction at Bollinger Shipyard in Louisiana.

The new, 38-vehicle river-class ferry is scheduled for delivery in March to replace the Thomas A. Baum on the Hatteras Inlet route. 

The Ocracoke Express passenger ferry between Hatteras and Ocracoke villages is also slated to begin operations in May.

The North Carolina Ferry System operates 21 boats on seven regular routes across five bodies of water.
