KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. — Two women are hurt, and one is in serious condition following a car crash in Kill Devil Hills Wednesday night.
Kill Devil Hills Police officers were called to the intersection of Baum Street and South Croatan Highway just before 10:45 p.m. Wednesday. At the scene, officers found 58-year-old Gabriela Canova hurt and a 60-year-old woman from Massachusetts in critical condition.
According to police, an investigation found that Canova had been driving north on US 158 when a 2020 Hyundai Tucson, driven by the 60-year-old woman, started driving behind her at high speeds, eventually crashing into the back of Canova's car.
When the cars separated, Canova ran into a light pole, causing it to snap apart. The Kill Devil Hills Fire Department removed her from her car.
The 60-year-old woman ran off the highway, hitting a traffic signal pole. Police say she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The police department said alcohol impairment is suspected.
Canova was taken to the Outer Banks Hospital with minor injuries. The 60-year-old woman was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The roadway was closed for more than three hours until the light pole was repaired.
