Wildlife-friendly lights turned on at Jennette's Pier

Officials say the new amber lights are less disruptive to insects, bats, birds, and sea turtles.

NAGS HEAD, N.C. — Jennette's Pier on North Carolina's Outer Banks has been upgraded, to be more friendly to wildlife.

Two hundred new exterior light fixtures and lampposts have been installed at the Nags Head pier. Officials say the new amber lights are less disruptive to insects, bats, birds, and sea turtles. They also reduce eye strain for humans.

Support funds from the NC Aquarium Society paid for the 200 new fixtures.

“Fortunately, the changeover came right when many of the old bollards and lampposts were starting to fail,” Jennette’s Pier Director Mike Remige said.
