Elizabeth City man dies after pedestrian crash in which his wife is charged, police say

Elizabeth City police say they responded to a vehicle crash at the intersection of White Street and Walston Street around 2:30 a.m.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — A man has died after a pedestrian crash in which his wife was charged very early Thursday morning in Elizabeth City, police say.

Elizabeth City police say they responded to a vehicle crash at the intersection of White Street and Walston Street around 2:30 a.m.

When officers arrived they found 43-year-old Jermaine Major of Highland Avenue ensnared under a 2004 Acura Sedan. Elizabeth City Firefighters and Pasquotank County EMS worked to free Major.

Major succumbed to his injuries.

Neighbors told 13News Now they know this couple, and remain shocked by what happened.

"They had children, grandchildren, they were the sweetest parents - husband and wife and I just don't understand it, I just understand why it had to happen," said Candy Green, a friend of the family.

Police say that the alleged driver of the vehicle was Major's wife 44-year-old Tyisha Major. Major was found to be impaired at the time of the crash.

She was charged with driving while impaired and felony death by motor vehicle.

Elizabeth City detectives have not commented to say what could have led to this incident, but neighbors said what started as an argument spilled out into the street.

"There was an argument and he was arguing and he was walking away leaving the scene and everything when she got out in the car behind him and just hit him from behind," said Green.

Major is currently in custody at Albemarle District Jail under a $50,000 secured bond.

Police say this is an active and ongoing investigation.

The Police Department urges anyone with additional information about this incident to contact the Elizabeth City Police Department at (252) 335-4321 or the Crime Line at (252) 335-5555. All information received will remain anonymous and strictly confidential.
