Husband dies, wife injured in vehicle crash on Outer Banks' Ocracoke Island

OCRACOKE, N.C. — A man was killed and a woman was injured in a crash on the Outer Banks' Ocracoke Island Tuesday morning, a spokesperson for Hyde County, North Carolina confirmed to 13News Now.

According to the spokesperson, who shared information from the Hyde County Sheriff's Department, 61-year-old Warren Howard Frantz and his wife Janet were traveling north on North Carolina Highway 12 to catch the 11 a.m. ferry to Hatteras Island when their vehicle crashed.

Warren Frantz died from his injuries, while Janet had minor injuries. The cause of the crash and the cause of death are under investigation, the spokesperson said.

The crash happened as many roadways and neighborhoods on Ocracoke Island experienced ocean overwash on Tuesday, even affecting Highway 12. Due to the road conditions, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) urged drivers in the region to use extreme caution.
