NC12 reopens after coastal storm creates ocean overwash along road

The road reopened on Ocracoke at noon Sunday, meaning it had reopened along its entire stretch.

OCRACOKE, N.C. — NC 12 reopened at noon on Sunday after large portions of it closed on Friday due to ocean overwash from a coastal storm.

North Carolina Department of Transportation crews have been working on the road since the storm, using heavy equipment to rebuild the protective berm, according to the road’s official account on X.

The road on Pea Island reopened at 2 p.m. Friday. Portions on Ocracoke remained closed on Saturday and did not reopen until Sunday, the account posted. With the openings on Ocracoke, the road was reopened along the entire Outer Banks.
